Why We Exist House In The Wood provides an opportunity for children and teens from economically disadvantaged families in Chicago to benefit from the outdoor camp experience. Using traditional camp activities, we have been providing campers with positive alternatives to negative urban lifestyles since 1910. We believe that individuals can choose only from among alternatives that are known to them. At House In The Wood, there exists a unique opportunity for children, teens and adults with varying family backgrounds to live together, encounter new experiences and grow as individuals. At camp, alternatives are presented in every aspect of daily camp life and practiced within small group and individual relationships. |

What we do during the Summer During the summer, we offer six to eight sessions of camp for our various groups. See the calendar for specific dates. We have a Teen Camp (ages 13 to 15), Family Camp, Summer Adventure Camp, and our regular two week sessions for children 7 to 12 years old. All of our sessions except Summer Adventure Camp are open to any Chicago resident. Summer Adventure Camp is our Settlement's Day Camp program for children ages 5 to 12. Our program emphasizes small group interaction with a focus on effective communication and conflict resolution skills. We offer the following activities: swimming, boating, outdoor living skills, campouts, cookouts, nature activities, arts, crafts, drama, dance and music, games, sports, and a peer mediation program, We also have an active Leaders-In-Training program for our teens. Our sliding fees for our city of Chicago families are based on income and expenses. This allows our families who would not normally be able to afford to go to camp the opportunity to do so. Some of our Chicago residents pay full price or are assisted by either the Title XX aid program or another agency. We have 35 summer employees to help us accomplish our goals. Our staff are typically college aged men and women from the Midwest and abroad. All of our staff arrive at camp with some experience and then we train them for 10 days to help them learn their job. We start our summer hiring in January. Summer Job Seekers click here for more information about our summer jobs. Top of Page |

What we do the rest of the year We spend a significant amount of the rest of the year preparing for the summer. Before the summer, we plan our programs and staff training, improve our facilities, and hire our summer staff. And, after the summer, we evaluate our entire summer operation using the feedback of staff, parents and campers. In addition to our summer program, we have a week long Winter Camp. At House In The Wood, there exists a unique opportunity for children, teens and adults with varying family backgrounds to live together, encounter new experiences and grow as individuals. At camp, alternatives are presented in every aspect of daily camp life and practiced within small group and individual relationships. We operate a full service retreat center that is open to groups who are interested in a private facility with good food in a simple but beautiful setting. Click on retreat center for more information about the how-to's of renting our facility and rate information or facility for more information about our lodging, meeting space and grounds. We also run weekend camps for our Settlement groups and our Noble Street Charter High School. |
